CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme. It is a scheme designed to improve the skills and competency among the workers in the construction industry and at the same time, equips the workers with the basic knowledge about safety and health issues.
Once the worker met the required criteria, a CSCS card will be issued which corresponds to the relevant occupation. The card will serve as a proof of competence in the industry as well as any qualifications or achievements acquired. It also serves as proof that the cardholder passed the Health, Safety & Environment Test thereby ensuring that he is capable of carrying out his job in a safe manner.
The construction site is not exclusive to workers, contractors and management. There are third-party individuals who don’t have construction skills yet they need to be inside the site frequently. These individuals are referred to as Visitors. But because of the risk involved inside the site, even the visitors need to have a CSCS card, a yellow card, in particular, to allow them access.
What is a Yellow CSCS Card?
The yellow CSCS card is for visitors who frequently visit a construction site even without construction skills. This includes realtors, real estate agents or developers.
In order to qualify for a visitor CSCS card, you need to pass the Health, Safety & Environment test for operatives. This is to ensure that you will be able to understand and demonstrate operational practices and safety precautions while inside the site.
Once you pass the HS&E Test, you will be issued a yellow CSCS card. This allows you to access the site while reducing the time spent on site induction by the site manager. Nonetheless, site managers must still ensure the safety and welfare of the people entering the site.
How long can I use the yellow card?
The yellow visitor card is valid for 5 years. However, if you are still in the process of gaining your qualification, a Trainee card will be issued. Trainee card is only temporary and is valid for 1 or 3 years depending on the course you are taking.
